Yakutsk (Yakut. Lyokuuvskay), the capital of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), is the biggest and most populous cultural/scientific center in Russia’s north-east. Yakutsk is situated on the left bank of the Lena River and is home to major river port. Since no railroad reaches as far as Yakutsk, the majority of cargo and passenger transport passes into and out of the city through this port. Besides this, passenger transport along the river also serves to connect the city with the population of Yakutia living at points along the Lena basin: Olyokminsky, Sangarye, and Zhigansky. The city’s atmosphere is more like that of a capital than a provincial town, where the fast tempo of city life complements the opportunities for leisure provided by the cities 6 theaters.
Yakutsk’s climate is subarctic: severe cold and scorching heat are common here. The average temperature is -10.0 C°.
Among places for relaxation and recreation we recommend one of the restaraunts or nightclubs in our “North Star” Hotel, which is recognized as one of the city’s major cultural and leisure centers.
